Jazz Chisholm Jr. went from hoping to avoid the injured list to likely being sidelined for 4-6 weeks.
That was the time frame Yankees manager Aaron Boone mentioned as likely for his starting second baseman, who was placed on the 10-day IL retroactive to Wednesday ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Rays in The Bronx.
Chisholm, who has been diagnosed with what Boone termed “a high-grade strain” of his right oblique, was replaced on the active roster and in Friday’s lineup by Triple-A recall Jorbit Vivas.
“I actually just talked to Jazz a couple of minutes ago because he even said [he] couldn’t believe it,” Boone said before the game. “He feels pretty good. So we’ll see, but I think it’s going to be some time. In his mind, it’s going to be real quick, but I think it’s going to be a while.
“That’s kind of the number of 4-6 weeks. That being said, Jazz has been, his history is he’s a quick healer. So we’ll see. But that’s kind of the easy diagnosis.”
The 27-year-old Chisholm played third base for the Yanks following a 2024 deadline trade with the Marlins before taking over at second this season for departed free agent Gleyber Torres.
Chisholm was batting .181 with seven homers, 17 RBIs and a ..714 OPS in 125 plate appearances before initially suffering the injury on a swing Tuesday in Baltimore.
He was removed later in that game following a dive into third base but said he hoped to only miss a few games without being shut down.
Pablo Reyes started at second base in Wednesday’s loss to the Orioles, but the 24-year-old Vivas was summoned for the third time this season and slated to make his major league debut after not getting on the field in his previous stints.
Vivas, who was acquired from the Dodgers in 2023, was slashing .319/.426/.436 in 26 games this season at Triple-A after catching Boone’s attention in spring training.
“I expect Jorbit to play a lot,” Boone said. “He’s playing really well down at Triple-A [Scranton-Wilkes Barre]. He’s been up a couple times, and I haven’t got him in yet .But we also know we have a good player there. He can really play second, and he can swing the bat.
“He’s really off to a good start. I felt like he was swinging the bat well in spring training, and he’s carried that into his Triple-A season so far. He’s good at second. I’m excited to see him play because I think he can help us.”
Notably, DJ LeMahieu also resumed his minor-league rehab Friday night for Double-A Somerset in Richmond due to weather concerns at Triple-A.
The veteran infielder has been on the IL all season following a spring training calf injury and paused his rehab assignment Tuesday to receive an injection in his hip.

Boone didn’t sound as if the Yanks would look to accelerate the 36-year-old LeMahieu’s return due to Chisholm’s absence.
“I don’t know about accelerating,” Boone said. “I think a couple days down was him being very proactive, and we’ve got to make sure we get this right.
“So it’s good that he’s back. But the biggest thing right now is I want him to just get consistent at-bats and get built up.”
