Despite facing her own challenges that same day, including a serious car accident, Duran decided to adopt Chewy. Though she worried how her older rescue dog would react, the two connected immediately.

Now, Chewy lives with Duran and spends his days at The Philomena, the assisted living facility in Kyle, Texas, where Duran works as executive director.

“The part that has been just so heartwarming is with memory care, we have residents who maybe can’t talk anymore, or who have become withdrawn due to dementia, but when we put Chewy right in their lap, all of a sudden, eyes are open and smiles are happening,” Duran commented.
