Even when Juan Soto seems to get a hit these days, it leads to an out for the Mets.
Soto came up with one out in the bottom of the first and Brandon Nimmo on first on Tuesday and hit a liner to right-center that White Sox center fielder Michael A. Taylor made a diving attempt to catch.
Taylor trapped the ball, but Nimmo — who’d rounded second — thought Taylor caught the ball and raced back to first base.
Soto, still running, went by Nimmo, who was headed in the other direction.
Nimmo made it back to first base safely, and Soto was ruled out at first after second baseman Lenyn Sosa, who got the relay throw from Taylor, threw to first baseman Miguel Vargas for the second out of the inning.

The Mets recovered quickly, though, as Pete Alonso followed with a two-run homer to center to tie the game at 2-2 and Brett Baty singled and Jared Young then hit another two-run shot to give them a 4-2 lead.
