On a cold afternoon in California, Deputies Anderson and Arbuckle from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department stopped at a Denny’s restaurant for lunch. While pulling in, they saw a young woman sitting alone in the parking lot. She looked upset and had a bright polka dot suitcase with her — it looked like it held everything she owned.
Deputy Anderson could tell something wasn’t right, so he walked over and gently asked her a few questions. He learned that she was all alone and had no way to get anywhere. The officers invited her inside the restaurant and asked her to have lunch with them. They paid for her meal themselves.
Still, Deputy Anderson couldn’t stop thinking about what would happen next for her. After they finished eating, the deputies asked her to come with them to their patrol car. They took her to the closest Greyhound bus station. Then, Deputy Anderson bought her a ticket so she could return home safely.
The deputies’ act of kindness moved everyone at the department. Their story was shared on the sheriff’s website. It said their actions showed the mission and values of the department — especially caring for the community and treating people with respect and empathy during hard times.
