Mets star's role after 'pretty unbelievable' return still murky: 'New for all of us'

CINCINNATI — Francisco Alvarez has one healthy thumb and pinkie but is hopeful that will be enough to get him through the season.

The Mets catcher returned from the injured list Friday and was in the team’s starting lineup for a 5-4 win over the Reds. It was Alvarez’s first appearance since Aug. 17, when he sprained a ligament in his right thumb diving into second base. It’s an injury that will require surgery to repair.

If that setback weren’t enough, Alvarez was drilled by a pitch after he began a minor league rehab assignment, leaving him with a broken pinkie on his left hand.

“I don’t really feel anything,” Alvarez said when asked if throwing or hitting caused the most discomfort for him. “I feel it a little bit when I throw the ball, when I get all the way out in front of it, so I have got to throw the ball a little bit more behind it.”
