Helsinki, Finland, closed its last coal power plant, Salmisaari, on April 1, 2025. This followed the shutdown of Hanasaari B two years earlier. The city aims to be carbon neutral by 2030, far ahead of EU targets.

With both plants now closed, Helsinki has reduced its CO2 emissions by 43%. The city is switching to carbon-neutral energy production using heat pumps, electric boilers, and renewable sources such as wind and solar.
