Freshkills Park, located in Staten Island, New York, was once the largest landfill in the world. At its peak in the late 1980s, it received up to 29,000 tons of trash per day.

More than two decades after the landfill’s closure, the area is being transformed. As part of this transformation, the first public section of the park opened in October 2023.

Now, the Freshkills Park Alliance launched the 50,000 Violet Project. The project aims to plant 50,000 native violets over two years to attract pollinators like monarch butterflies and bees, while enhancing biodiversity and restoring the local ecosystem.

Beyond its environmental mission, Freshkills Park serves as a hub for education and community engagement, hosting events like nature walks, birdwatching tours, art installations, and environmental education programs for local schools.
