Christopher Goodnow and David Nemazee have been awarded the 2025 Crafoord Prize in Polyarthritis, worth 6 million Swedish kronor (approx. $620,000). They discovered crucial mechanisms that prevent B cells from attacking the body’s own tissues in autoimmune diseases.

While many researchers focused on what causes autoimmune diseases, Christopher and David took a different approach. They asked why most people don’t develop these conditions. Their work centered on B cells, which are key components of our immune system.

Their discoveries have provided a detailed understanding of how the body normally prevents faulty B cells from attacking tissues. This knowledge has already led to treatments where physicians neutralize B cells in patients with severe autoimmune conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.

The prize will be presented by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden during Crafoord Days in May.
