BOY’S MOMS
Someone shared this with me, and I knew I had to share it with you. There are no truer words. Take a deep breath. Here we go.
You often hear about a girl’s father “giving his daughter away” on her wedding day. I never gave much regard to the mothers and their sons. But you mommas also give away something. Something equally precious. Something I knew I could never get back.
I gave up being the person he hugged and kissed.
I gave away that I was the person he looked for in a crowd.
I gave up being the first person he goes to when things go bad.
I gave up being the person he made laugh in the midst of the day.
I gave up being his number one girl.
I handed away a part of my heart.
I gave my son away.
Deep down, I know he will always love me, but he loves her even more. He loves her more than his mother, and that’s fine. That’s when I realized he’d found the one. But isn’t this what we want? We want them to marry the girl they want first, even if that means putting us second.
Mommas,
Love him while you’re still first.
Kiss his adorable baby face and linger in those lanky teenage hugs.
Drive him to school even if he is grumpy and doesn’t speak to you!
Listen when he needs to vent or let off steam.
Love on his pals!
Bring the medication to school for the 100,000th time. He may have a headache, or he may simply want to leave class and talk to you for a few minutes.
Sit next to his hospital bed, even though he messed up.
Enjoy every minute under those Friday night lights.
Love him, forgive him, and also forgive yourself for the mistakes you made!
Because one day you’ll give him up….
You will stand and witness him open his heart to the love of his life. You will dance, and he will say the sweetest things about who he is because of you.
He will hold you tightly, which will feel like a goodbye. You’ll become his second-best girl, and it will be really difficult.
