A New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Scarborough was cancelled to protect an Arctic walrus. The walrus, nicknamed Thor, arrived on December 31, 2022, in the harbor.

Following advice from wildlife experts, authorities called off the event to avoid distressing the animal. By around 5:00 p.m., the walrus was seen heading back out to sea.

Experts believed Thor was merely resting before continuing his journey north, possibly in search of a new feeding ground.
