Secretary Linda McMahon: “Today, June 1st, marks the 100th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision on parental rights, Pierce v. Society of Sisters. In 1925, the Supreme Court unanimously struck down an Oregon law that required all children to attend public schools and disallowed families to pursue education options of their choice. In the Court’s opinion, citing the Fourteenth Amendment, Justice McReynolds wrote, “The child is not the mere creature of the state. Those who nurture him and direct his destiny have the right, coupled with the high duty, to recognize and prepare him for additional obligations.” Under President Trump’s leadership, the U.S. Department of Education is working to uphold this very principle. Today, let’s celebrate the historic precedent that this case set for school choice and parental rights, and commit to preserving an America where children belong to their parents, not the government.”
