During a fire in Brooklyn in 1996, Scarlett, a stray mother cat, bravely entered a burning garage. She made five trips to carry each of her kittens to safety.

The brave mother suffered severe injuries – her eyes were blistered shut, her mouth, eyes, and ears were scorched, her paws were burned, and her coat was badly singed. Despite her condition, her maternal instinct drove her to ensure all her babies were rescued.

Firefighter David Giannelli found the kittens first, placed away from the fire. After searching, he found Scarlett badly injured but alive behind a pile of rubble across the street.

“Any animal is worth helping. You have to do what you can,” Giannelli commented.

The North Shore Animal League provided intensive care for the feline family. After receiving over 6,000 adoption inquiries from around the world, Scarlett and her surviving kittens found loving homes nearby.
