BREAKING: Iowa Lawmaker Set to Offer Bill to Establish Antisemitism Study Commission – The Daily Signal
According to a report by the Daily Signal on Monday, Iowa Republican Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks plans to introduce legislation on Tuesday to create a commission that would examine antisemitism in the United States. This proposed bill represents the newest initiative in the House of Representatives aimed at addressing the concerning increase in anti-Jewish sentiment within the U.S.
The congresswoman from Iowa informed The Daily Signal that the commission would aim to supply “factual information, factual data” regarding the rise of antisemitism. She stated, “First and foremost, assert the awareness that the issue exists and acknowledgment that antisemitism acts have been on the rise, and this most recent one [the fatal shooting of a couple outside a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C.], I think, underscores the need for an overview.”
The commission would have the authority to conduct hearings and issue subpoenas for witness testimony. It would also be allowed to “secure directly from any department or agency of the United States information” deemed necessary for its work.
If this bill becomes law, a commission appointed by Congress would spend a year investigating the issue. Following its investigation, it would present a report containing its findings and suggestions to the president and Congress. The commission would then disband 120 days after submitting its report. The bill also stipulates that the commission can have no more than four members from the same political party.
