My mom worked on this off and on for about 15 years. It’s finally finished and weighs 26lbs. The base of this behemoth is made of a grid of double crochet and chain stitch with a standing double crochet of scrap/random yarn on top.
You can see in one of the photos she had the idea to do something like a granny square, and then just decided nah, squiggles. π
